I had the pleasure to get to know Gerry in the early 1980s at The City University, London. He was a kind, compassionate man who regularly gave the blessing at our weekly Formal Dinners at Northampton Hall. We spent many an hour afterwards in pleasant and humorous conversation putting the world to rights! Rest in Peace my old friend.

Dom Alberic Stacpoole RIP
I particularly remember his suggestion to Andrew King (RIP 2002) that we should all three adjourn to the Turf after an ESBVM meeting - he glanced round the emptying room, and said:
"I doubt if anyone else will be interested." then, without missing a beat - "Let's go before they notice."

I got to know Gerald through the ESBVM and came to know him through my own Church and socially subsequently. As he grew older and more frail we kept in touch and exchanged news. He was always very kind and interested in all that was going on. His going leaves a bigger hole than he probably imagined in other people's lives and breaks another link with the past for so many. May he rest in peace.

He was so kind to me in 2002 when Andrew King, my beloved companion, died - we'd met through ESBVM in the late 1980s
I will never forget the kind messages that he sent, through the difficult years that followed

Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Joe Farrelly. Even here, as far away as the US, we know all he has done for the ESBVM. May his memory be eternal!

Fr Edwards was my history teacher at St Michaels College in Leeds in the 60s I would just like to say what a great teacher he was he inspired in me a love of history and how much I appreciated his efforts. I eventually became a teacher myself and have to say that I modelled my self on him aping his methods albeit in a completely different subject area and achieved considerable success myself as a result in a 30 year career - Thankyou Father

I used to be a member of ESBVM when I was a Methodist Presbyter. I left because I felt it was becoming so erudite it was in danger of becoming esoteric, with the result that not only would it have a limited membership but also its future would be in jeopardy. If we want Christians of all Churches to be more "ecumenical"- and even that is debatable! - then clearly Mary is a unique ecumenical focus. However most of our congregations are not academic intellectuals, and it is they who will be the real strength of ecumenism because in the main they are the Church. Maybe the priority of ESBVM should be a dimension of ecumenical mission and outreach. It needs spiritual fresh air and fresh expression to make it more aware of and sensitive to the majority of the laos, many of whom have never heard of ESBVM. If this emphasis was taken on board I would enthusiastically rejoin for I have a deep devotion to Mary. Best wishes, David.
