PILGRIMAGE TO MOUNT GRACE PRIORY AND THE LADY CHAPEL (OSMOTHERLEY), NORTH YORKSHIRE

Mount Grace Priory, just off the A19. and hidden in woods at the foot of the Cleveland Hills, is the best preserved Carthusian Monastery in England. The Monks lived as hermits in their cells, one of which now restored, is furnished to give a picture of their routine of work and prayer. The Priory is operated by National Heritage and there is an entrance fee. Parking is free.

We shall pray the Society Office at 12.30 Noon, after which we will visit the restored Monks Cell, the Manor Museum built in 1654, then enjoy a pic-nic lunch, before moving off by car, or on foot, to the Lady Chapel. The walk of about a mile is steep in part and requires a degree of fitness and suitable footwear. It will start from the Priory Car Park at 2.00pm, and will be led by Fr Hilary Alflatt. Car owners may prefer to park in Osmotherley, and to take the less exacting walk of about 30 minutes. This will start at 2.30pm from the Benedictine Monastery in the village.

Visited by Christians for six hundred years, the Lady Chapel attracts pilgrims from many churches. It is in the care of the Benedictine Monks from Ampleforth Abbey, and Fr Damian OSB., is the Parish Priest. The Vigil Mass will be celebrated at 3.30pm., followed at 4.40pm by Evening Prayer. Light refreshments afterwards, and an opportunity to meet members from the North (and elsewhere).

Enquiries to Dennis Gerrard. Tel.: 0114.2682984.
