Telling Mary's Story: The "Life of Mary" through the Ages
Meeting of the Mariological Society of America
Saint Augustine, Florida

Recent developments in exegesis, the importance attributed to the ever elusive narrative theology grappling with the intellectual heritage of Niebuhr, Frei, Levinas, and Ricoeur, but especially the anthropological readings of Mary's person and role have led to a renewed interest in her portrait and story. The special attention given to Mary's biography is not new. The apocryphals, medieval legends and vitae, visions and artistic renderings: they all witness a periodically intense curiosity about who and how she was.

The Mariological Society of America will attempt to explore various expressions of this literary genre, called the "Life of Mary," in its 2009 annual convention which takes place in St. Augustine, FL on May 26-29.

We invite interested scholars to submit title and précis of their projected contribution to one of the following areas of study on Mary's life:

- Does Scripture offer a specific portrait of Mary?
- The life of Mary in the Apocryphals
- The medieval 'vitae' of Mary
- Do Marian legends tell us how she was perceived, how we expect her to be?
- Mary's life and person in the visions and writings of Saints and mystics
- Marian biographies of modern and contemporary periods
- The portrait of Mary in recent novels and plays
- Mary's life in the visual arts
- Mary's life in film
- Are the Marian dogmas a source for Mary's theological biography?

Deadline of this "call for papers": September 1st 2008
Please send title and précis of your contribution by email to: Father Francois Rossier, S.M., Father Thomas A. Thompson, S.M., or by post to: The Marian Library, University of Dayton; Dayton, OH 45469-1390.
